University-industry linkages place learners in reputable firms for hands-on practice
KABALE — St. Ignatius University student Akansasira Shivan has commenced her internship at Centenary Bank, marking a key transition from classroom learning to professional banking practice in Kabale.
The placement is part of St. Ignatius University’s strategy to connect students with reputable organisations and companies where academic theory is applied to real-world operations.
University facilitates industry exposure
According to Akansasira, the university played a direct role in securing the opportunity. “St. Ignatius University actively links students to reputable institutions where we can apply what we learn in lectures,” she said. “Through the university’s partnerships, I was placed at Centenary Bank. Here, classroom concepts are now becoming real banking practice.”
University officials say the approach is designed to make graduates more competitive and career-ready by exposing them to professional environments before graduation.
Hands-on banking experience
At Centenary Bank, Akansasira is gaining practical exposure to modern banking operations. Her duties include shadowing experienced professionals, observing customer service delivery, and handling aspects of financial service delivery at the branch level.
She noted that the internship is helping her develop both technical knowledge and core professional values.
“Banking requires integrity, teamwork, customer care, and a strong work ethic,” she said. “This experience is building my confidence for a career in the financial sector.”
Call to fellow students
Akansasira urged current and prospective St. Ignatius University students to embrace internship opportunities. “With dedication and a willingness to learn, every internship becomes a stepping stone,” she said. “I am proud to represent St. Ignatius University at Centenary Bank, and I intend to make the most of this learning experience.” Centenary Bank is one of Uganda’s leading commercial banks with a wide branch network, including in the Kigezi sub-region.

This highlights the value of our hands on academics as far as skills are concerned. We really thank the administration for setting up such a foundation.
